A Mirage In The Desert

We have arrived in Santa Fe and now I can finally understand why the state stamps their license plates with "Land Of Enchantment".

The city is the highest capital city in the United States, resting at nearly 7,200 feet above sea level.  Interestingly, the city is also the oldest capital in the US, having been founded in 1610.  Nearly 70,000 residents inhabit the city and over 140,000 live in the greater Santa Fe metro area.

Related to affordable housing, median household income is roughly $46,600 and per capita income is $31,000.  Median rent is $900 meaning that the average resident would spend somewhere around 35% of their income on housing and the average family would spend 25% of their income on housing.

Demographics wise, Hispanic residents make up 47.3% of the population, Caucasians are 45.5%, Asians are 2.6%, mixed race individuals are 1.8%, American Indians are 1.6% of the population, African Americans are 1.1% of the population and the remaining .2% are other.

In terms of my personal experience here in Santa Fe, I love this city.  There is absolutely something magical about the geography when entering the area, the architectural style, the rich cultural scene, the amazing food and the awesome cycling community.  Mountain biking and commuting by bicycle are two major components of life here in the city.  The skies are blue 300+ days of the year.  Winter months experience a huge influx of visitors because of the skiing and snowboarding environment in the portion of the Rockies that surround the city.

The ride yesterday into this gorgeous city was a challenge, but I do believe that it was well worth the extra effort.
